Budget 2024
On the 30th of May, the Government will deliver its budget outlining its priorities for publics pending and economic policies.
To help inform our commentary on the Budget, our members shared their views on the kind of choices they think the Government should be making.
We asked you about 4 key areas which were
- What we want for workers
- What we want for the public and community services
- What we want for the Governments relationship with Māori
- What we want for families and communities
Read a summary of the responses along with some direct quotes
These comments also helped inform our submission on the budget policy statement.
The budget policy statement is a key accountability document for government. New Zealanders should be able to look to the Budget Policy Statement for a clear description from government of the policy reasons for its priorities in the Budget, including where they fit in delivering its long-term vision for the country.
That is not the case with the 2024 Budget Policy Statement (BPS). We do not believe it meets the requirements of s26M of the Public Finance Act and recommended that the Committee refer it back to the Minister of Finance for improvement.

The 2024 budget is going to be one of the most important ones to date for workers and their families.
In the coming weeks following the budget we will present in-depth commentary and ways to be involved in understanding the outcomes for all New Zealanders.
